LIPOSUCTION : QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

What is a liposuction?

The liposuction is a technique used to suction fat. Dr Fanous uses very small incisions and fine canulas (tubes) to suck the fat with a suction machine.

Can the removed fat come back?

The fat removed will not come back. Although, we have to understand the fact that if the patient puts on a lot of weight, this weight gain will distribute itself evenly throughout the body.

How many pounds does the doctor remove?

It is important to understand that liposuction is not a weight loss technique. It is a technique used to improve the contour of the body and to define the silhouette.

Who is the ideal candidate for liposuction?

There are three important factors to determine if a candidate is ideal for liposuction. First off she is not obese, so her weight is normal or a little bit above average. Secondly, the accumulation of fat is located in certain regions only (ex: stomach, hips, thighs, knees, etc.). Lastly, the patient needs to be younger than 45 years old (ideally between 20 and 30 years old) because with age, the skin loses its elasticity.

What are the complications?

Like in the case of any other surgery, complications are possible but rare. Complications include bleeding, infection, scaring, irregularities, etc.

What type of anesthesia is performed?

A local anesthesia is performed with a combination of sedatives, where you will be 80% asleep and not 100% like the general anesthesia.

How are the scars?

The scars are very short, about a centimeter each. For each operated region, two to three small incisions are made. It is Dr Fanous who decides where the incisions will be.

When can I go back to work?

Generally, you may go back to work one week after the operation. The final results may be seen six months following the operation.

How long does the surgery last?

The time given for a liposuction procedure will vary between one and three hours, depending on the number of operated regions.

Which technique does the doctor use?

Dr Fanous uses the “Tumescent” technique: also known as “Dr Klein’s technique”, which uses a very diluted solution to infiltrate the fat tissues before suctioning them.

What happens after the operation?

A large volume of local anesthesia is injected under the skin before the liposuction. This helps facilitate the suction of the fat. That is why there is a discharge of pinkish liquid for the first 24 hours following the surgery. The liquid will seep out through the small incisions.

Which type of bandage is used?

Dr Fanous uses a special sponge to cover the skin. This sponge makes it very comfortable for the patient.

Is it painful?

There is minimal pain thanks to the use of the special sponge and the “Tumescent” technique.

LIPOSUCTION : OTHER INFORMATION

Liposuction is a relatively safe technique that involves the removal of fat cells from the body.

Liposuction may be a last resort solution if you have unwanted fatty deposits which you have been unable to diminish through diet and exercise.

These fatty deposits are commonly found in the areas of the thighs, hips, tummy, buttocks, knees, ankles, back, etc. Liposuction may also be performed to remove excess fat in the “double chin” area.

The fatty deposits are suctioned out by making a tiny incision through which a small tube or "cannula" is inserted. The tube is connected to a source of suction, somewhat like a gentle vaccum cleaner. The tube is then passed within the fatty tissue so that unwanted fat cells are loosened and suctioned away.

This surgical procedure is usually performed by Dr. Fanous on an outpatient basis.

What kind of anesthesia is used ?

In general, local anesthesia with sedation is used.

What happens after surgery ?

Most patients experience some bruising, minimal discomfort and mild swelling which may last for a few weeks.

Most patients resume normal activity or return to work within a few days following the surgery.

It takes up to six months to a year before the final result of surgery is apparent.

Following your procedure, you will usually be required to wear an elastic dressing for a few hours daily to provide support and to maintain your new shape.

What are the risks ?

There are risks as in any surgical procedure, such as infection, bleeding, scarring, skin irregularities, discoloration, asymmetry, numbness, anesthesia reactions, etc.
