NOSE CORRECTION : QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
How long is the surgery?
A nose surgery (Rhinoplasty) takes about an hour and a half.
When will I be able to go back to work? To school?
You may go back to work or school one week after your surgery.
Does the doctor break my nose?
The doctor files down (rasps) the excess of cartilage and bone. Sometimes, he moves the bone very slightly.
When will I be presentable?
You will be presentable one week after the surgery, but your nose will continue to improve for two to three years following your surgery because the swelling fades very slowly.
Does the doctor use any packaging in my nose?
Dr Fanous does not use any form of packaging in the nose, only gelatin which does not hurt and goes away on its own.
Does the doctor use implants?
In 15% of cases, Dr Fanous uses an implant. The implant is made like a sponge; the same type of implant that is used for heart surgeries.
Are there any complications involved?
As for any surgeries, there is about a 5% probability of encountering complications is of 5%. complications include scarring, infections, bleeding, etc.
Are there any incisions done on my nose?
There are no visible incisions made on the nose, since all incisions are done through the inside of the nose. Sometimes, a small incision is made at the base of the nostrils, which usually heals quite well.
What technique does the doctor use?
Dr Fanous uses a technique called “mini-dissection” It is a new surgical technique popularized by the doctor, which embraces a combination of three factors: ‘mini-incisions’ (thus smaller scars), a ‘mini-surgery’ (thus less incisions) and threads used to mobilize tissues without cutting them. This technique is very efficient and implies less risks and less swelling.
Will there be any bruising or swelling around my eyes?
Usually there is minimal swelling or bruising around the eyes.
Does it hurt?
The surgery doesn’t hurt at all.
What is a nose that is considered hard to correct?
There are four situations in which case a nose is hard to correct: First of all, the ideal age to have a nose correction is 20 years old, when the skin is finer and elastic. After 30 years old, you can still obtain a good result, just not as good as if you were 20. Secondly, if the nose is crooked, it is more difficult to correct because the nose is empty inside: it cannot be moved too much to the left nor to the right, or else it might collapse. Also, if the tip of the nose projects too far, it is hard to retract it closer to the face. Finally, if the skin on the nose is thick, it will not easily contract back into place, even by removing the excess bone and cartilage underneath.
The easiest thing to do is to remove a hump on the top part of the nose.
NOSE CORRECTION : OTHER INFORMATION
The cute little button nose, the slender model nose, Cyrano's nose. No matter what the shape, the nose is one of the most noticeable facial features.
And surgery to reshape the nose or rhinoplasty, continues to be one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures.
"Nose jobs" (rhinoplasty) are the most sophisticated of all cosmetic surgeries, because the nose is a completely hollow structure.
The surgeon has to change the shape of the nose, while preserving intact both its support (outside walls) and its breathing function (inside wall).
Dr. Fanous uses a very new technique : the mini-dissection.
Tiny incisions and minimum surgery are used to achieve maximum results with minimal swelling.
Nose surgery consists of removing the excess cartilage and gently filing down the excess bone.
The scars are hidden inside the nose. If it is necessary to decrease the size of the nostrils, a tiny scar is left at the base of each nostril.
Frequently, implants made of a synthetic sponge-like material may be used to augment parts of the nose and to improve the final result of the surgery. Infection of these implants is possible but uncommon. If an infection does occur, the implant is removed and replaced again a few months later. All stitches are absorbable.
To prevent pain, a new type of absorbable pack, like gelatin, is placed inside the nose and will gradually dissolve during the first week following surgery. On the average, nose surgery is performed within one to two hours.
At the end of the operation, a small plaster cast is applied to the nose. After a week, the cast is painlessly removed. Most of the swelling and discoloration around the eyes tend to disappear within the following week.
Your nose will continue to improve for at least a year following surgery. Therefore, do not expect to see your final result when the cast is removed. Do not be alarmed if the shape of your nose keeps changing during the first few months.
On the average, you are presentable and may return to work one to two weeks after surgery. Numbness of the upper teeth and mild nasal blockage may be experienced for a few days to a few weeks following surgery. Thick nasal skin makes the surgery more difficult, limiting somewhat its final result and prolonging recovery. This is because thick skin does not shrink as much as thin skin (therefore the nose cannot be made much smaller).
Often, the use of a synthetic implant, like a sponge, is required to achieve a superior result. In rare cases of extreme skin thickness, thinning the skin by sanding may be added to the surgery. Special medications may be administered following surgery in order to shrink the skin.
If you have thick nasal skin, your nose may be improved by surgery, but you must be patient while awaiting the final result and realistic in your outlook. In the case of revision surgery when the nose has undergone one or more previous unsuccessful operations, improvement is possible but the surgery is technically more difficult and the results more limited than in the case of a virgin nose.
In some cases, the appearance of your nose may also be influenced by some weakness in the features that surround it, such as flat cheeks, thin lips, a recessed forehead, a double chin, etc. These features can be corrected at the same time or shortly after nasal surgery to enhance the final appearance of your nose. Even a slightly weak chin can make your nose look bigger. In such a case, increasing the size of your chin by a few millimeters is recommended to improve the appearance of your nose.
Weak chin
A weak chin has an immense effect on your other facial features. Your nose looks larger and your lower lip seems droopy. A receding chin also affects your facial expression by conveying a "weak" look. This is sensed rather than seen! To correct it, a small incision is made beneath the chin. A synthetic implant, like a sponge, is then introduced inside the chin to enlarge it. Infection of the implant is possible but uncommon. Some numbness of the lips may be experienced for a few days to a few weeks after surgery.
